Absalom Jones was a prominent figure in African American history, known for his contributions as a religious leader and social activist. Born into slavery in 1746, he later gained his freedom and became a minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Jones played a significant role in advocating for the rights of African Americans and fighting against racial discrimination.
In 1787, Jones co-founded the Free African Society, an organization that provided assistance to the African American community in Philadelphia. He also played a key role in the establishment of the St. Thomas African Episcopal Church, one of the first African American Episcopal churches in the United States.
Jones's advocacy extended beyond religious matters. He was a vocal critic of slavery and worked tirelessly to promote educational opportunities for African Americans. His efforts laid the groundwork for future generations of African American leaders and activists.
Absalom Jones's legacy is one of resilience, determination, and a commitment to fighting for social justice. His contributions continue to inspire and shape the ongoing struggle for equality and civil rights.
In honor of his legacy, the Absalom Jones Lodge was named after the first Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Master of the State of P.A., who sought to establish the first lodge in the City of Philadelphia. As Masons, the members of Absalom Jones Lodge embrace the principle of charity, aiming to aid and assist the community in various ways. This includes donating time to help people in distress, guiding the youth in finding direction, organizing fundraisers, raising money for causes or foundations, and raising awareness about important local issues.
Absalom Jones Lodge continues to be a positive figure in the city of Easton and the Lehigh Valley, striving to make a difference and contribute to the betterment of the community.
